Overview

Intranasal glutathione is an investigational therapy developed by Bastyr University for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. The active ingredient is reduced glutathione (GSH), a naturally occurring tripeptide (γ-L-glutamyl-L-cysteinylglycine) that serves as the brain's primary endogenous antioxidant. In Parkinson's disease, glutathione levels are notably depleted in the substantia nigra, contributing to oxidative stress, mitochondrial failure, and neuronal death. This formulation is delivered via an intranasal spray to bypass the blood-brain barrier, a major limitation of oral or intravenous administration. Clinical development has progressed through Phase IIb trials, which evaluated the safety and efficacy of 100mg and 200mg doses in improving motor symptoms in patients with early-to-mid-stage Parkinson's disease.
