Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Intranasal N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a drug-device combination therapy being developed by Neuronasal, in partnership with ATAI Life Sciences, for the treatment of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and Parkinson's disease. The product utilizes the Aptar Unit Dose System (UDS) to deliver NAC directly to the nasal cavity, aiming to achieve therapeutic concentrations in the brain while bypassing the blood-brain barrier and avoiding the systemic side effects associated with high-dose oral NAC. NAC acts as a precursor to glutathione, the brain's primary antioxidant, and modulates the 5-lipoxygenase-activating protein (FLAP) to reduce neuroinflammation and oxidative stress. The program received FDA IND clearance in 2020 and has proceeded into Phase 1 clinical development.
