Intrasite is a sterile, amorphous hydrogel wound dressing primarily composed of modified carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) polymer (2.3%), propylene glycol (20%) as a humectant and preservative, and water[4][8]. It is designed to create and maintain a moist wound environment that promotes autolytic debridement by gently rehydrating necrotic tissue and absorbing exudate without damaging fragile granulation tissue[1][6][10]. This moist environment supports the body's natural healing processes by facilitating tissue repair and regeneration. Intrasite is non-adherent, easy to apply with its Applipak system, and can be rinsed away easily without harming viable tissue[1][4]. It does not contain preservatives other than propylene glycol. Mechanistically, the modified carboxymethylcellulose binds to wound surfaces where it absorbs exudate while maintaining moisture; propylene glycol acts as both humectant and bacteriostatic agent[8]. The gel facilitates autolytic debridement of sloughy or necrotic wounds by rehydrating dead tissue for easier removal.
