Overview

An investigational nutritional intervention consisting of supplemental intravenous amino acid infusions administered as early metabolic support (EMS) for critically ill trauma patients. Developed and studied at Boston Medical Center, the protocol involves providing high-dose protein (approximately 1.5-2.0 g/kg/day) via peripheral or central venous access within 24 hours of admission to a surgical intensive care unit (SICU). The intervention aims to counteract the profound protein catabolism and negative nitrogen balance typically seen after major trauma. Clinical pilot data indicates that this early supplementation can modulate the systemic inflammatory response by decreasing pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1 beta and increasing soluble interleukin-6 receptor levels, potentially improving metabolic recovery and protein economy during the first week post-injury.
