Overview

This is a combination therapy of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and rituximab. IVIG is a blood product containing pooled human immunoglobulins (antibodies) used to modulate immune responses in various autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Rituximab is a chimeric monoclonal antibody that targets the CD20 antigen on B lymphocytes. By binding to CD20, rituximab depletes B cells through mechanisms such as complement-dependent cytotoxicity and antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity. This combination is used off-label for certain autoimmune disorders—such as immune thrombocytopenia or some neurological conditions—where both broad immune modulation (by IVIG) and targeted B-cell depletion (by rituximab) are desired[2][3][5][6]. Rituximab was developed by Genentech/Biogen Idec.
