Overview

Intravenous immunoglobulin G (IVIG) is a sterile solution of concentrated IgG antibodies derived from the pooled plasma of thousands of healthy human donors. It is administered intravenously to provide passive immunity and modulate immune responses in patients with primary or secondary immunodeficiencies and various autoimmune or inflammatory diseases. The mechanism of action involves multiple pathways including neutralization of pathogens by direct antibody binding; modulation of Fc receptors on phagocytes; inhibition or neutralization of autoantibodies; regulation of cytokine production; suppression of complement activation; and broad anti-inflammatory effects. IVIG is used as replacement therapy in humoral immunodeficiency syndromes such as X-linked agammaglobulinemia and severe combined immunodeficiency syndrome. It also treats autoimmune conditions like immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), Kawasaki disease to prevent coronary aneurysms in children, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), Guillain-Barré syndrome and other neurological or rheumatological disorders[1][2][3][4][5][6][7].
