Overview

Intrinsa is a transdermal patch formulation of testosterone indicated for the treatment of hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in women who have undergone bilateral oophorectomy and hysterectomy (surgically induced menopause) and are receiving concomitant estrogen therapy. The patch delivers 300 micrograms of testosterone per 24 hours. Testosterone is a naturally occurring steroid hormone classified as an androgen; it acts primarily by binding to androgen receptors, modulating gene expression and protein synthesis that influence sexual function, libido, and other physiological processes. In premenopausal women, endogenous production ranges from 100 to 400 micrograms per day; levels drop significantly after surgical menopause. Clinical studies demonstrated that Intrinsa improved measures of sexual desire and satisfaction compared to placebo in the target population[1][3][7]. The product was developed for female sexual dysfunction but its marketing authorization has been withdrawn in Europe at the request of the holder[1], and it was not approved by the FDA due to safety concerns[2][9].
