Overview

Inulin + sodium selenite (SS) is a combination of the prebiotic fiber inulin and the mineral supplement sodium selenite. This combination is primarily investigated for its synergistic effects on gut health, immune modulation, and the prevention of colorectal cancer. Inulin, a polysaccharide belonging to the fructan class, acts as a prebiotic by selectively stimulating the growth of beneficial gut bacteria such as *Bifidobacterium*. Sodium selenite serves as a source of selenium, an essential trace element that is a component of selenoproteins with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Research suggests that inulin can enhance the bioavailability of selenium and that the two substances together may more effectively inhibit the development of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) in the colon and modulate the gut microbiota compared to either agent alone. Clinical studies have explored this combination for its impact on gut microbiota composition and immune function in healthy adults and patients at risk for colorectal malignancies.
