Inulin-propionate ester (IPE) is a chemically modified dietary fiber designed to deliver the short-chain fatty acid propionate directly to the colon. It consists of inulin (a fermentable oligosaccharide) chemically bonded to propionic acid. The primary mechanism of action is targeted colonic release of propionate, which stimulates the secretion of anorectic gut hormones peptide YY (PYY) and glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), leading to increased satiety and reduced appetite. Clinical studies have shown that IPE supplementation can reduce energy intake, prevent weight gain over several months, improve insulin sensitivity, and modulate gut microbiota composition and systemic inflammatory responses in overweight or obese adults[5][8][6]. However, recent large-scale trials have questioned its effectiveness for long-term weight management in younger adults[10]. IPE is considered a novel food ingredient rather than a pharmaceutical drug.
