Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Invega Hafyera (paliperidone palmitate 6-month) is an atypical antipsychotic and a long-acting injectable (LAI) prodrug of paliperidone. It is indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults who have been adequately treated with either the 1-month (Invega Sustenna) or 3-month (Invega Trinza) paliperidone palmitate formulations for at least four months. Developed by Janssen, the drug is administered twice yearly via intramuscular injection. Its therapeutic mechanism involves the antagonism of central dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors, which helps manage the positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia. The extended-release profile is achieved through the slow dissolution of the palmitate ester at the injection site, followed by hydrolysis into the active moiety, paliperidone.
