The investigational hMPV vaccine (monovalent) is an mRNA-based vaccine candidate designed to prevent infection by human metapneumovirus (hMPV), a significant cause of lower respiratory tract disease, particularly in older adults. This monovalent formulation encodes the antigen for hMPV only, as opposed to bivalent or combination vaccines that may target both hMPV and other viruses such as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The mRNA is encapsulated in a lipid nanoparticle delivery system and administered via intramuscular injection. The primary mechanism of action involves induction of an immune response against the fusion protein of hMPV, leading to production of neutralizing antibodies that can prevent viral entry into host cells.
