Overview

IO-Pc 4 is a nanoparticle-based theranostic agent designed for photodynamic therapy (PDT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It consists of the second-generation photosensitizer Pc 4 (a silicon phthalocyanine) encapsulated within or conjugated to iron oxide (IO) nanoparticles. The iron oxide core provides magnetic properties that allow the formulation to serve as a contrast agent for MRI-guided localization and monitoring. Upon activation by specific wavelengths of light, the Pc 4 payload generates reactive oxygen species, primarily singlet oxygen, which induce apoptosis and necrosis in tumor cells. This nanoparticle delivery system is intended to improve the solubility and tumor accumulation of the hydrophobic Pc 4 molecule while reducing the light-associated systemic toxicity often associated with conventional PDT drugs.
