Overview

Iobenzamic acid is a triiodinated, water-insoluble contrast medium formerly used for oral cholecystography to visualize the gallbladder and biliary tract. Administered orally, it is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, conjugated in the liver, and excreted into the bile, where it provides radiopacity for X-ray imaging. Beyond its diagnostic use, iobenzamic acid is known to interfere with thyroid hormone metabolism by inhibiting the peripheral conversion of thyroxine (T4) to triiodothyronine (T3) via inhibition of type 1 deiodinase. This pharmacological side effect results in a transient decrease in serum T3 and a reciprocal increase in reverse T3 (rT3). Its use has largely been superseded by non-invasive imaging techniques such as ultrasonography and computed tomography.
