Overview

Iodex is a brand name used for several different topical formulations intended for external use. The most common forms are: - **Iodine-based antiseptic ointment:** Used to prevent and treat minor skin infections in cuts, scrapes, burns, and wounds. The active ingredient is usually povidone-iodine or elemental iodine. It acts as an antiseptic by killing bacteria and other pathogens on the skin[1][2][7]. - **Pain relief balms/gels:** In India and some other markets, "Iodex" refers to a multi-purpose pain relief balm containing a blend of ingredients such as Gandapura oil (wintergreen oil), Nilgiri oil (eucalyptus oil), turpentine oil, pudinah (mint), lavanga oil (clove). These provide local warmth and soothing effects for musculoskeletal pain like backache, joint pain, sprains/strains[3][6][8]. - **Diclofenac-based gel ("Iodex UltraGel+")**: This formulation contains diclofenac diethylamine 2% or 2.32%, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that penetrates the skin to reduce inflammation and relieve joint/muscle pain[4][5]. Mechanism of action depends on the formulation: - For iodine/povidone-iodine ointments: Disrupts microbial cell walls/proteins leading to broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. - For Ayurvedic balms/oils: Counterirritant effect with local warming sensation; may reduce inflammation via essential oils. - For diclofenac gel: Inhibits cyclooxygenase enzymes reducing prostaglandin synthesis at the site of application.
