Iodine (131I) norcholesterol is a radioiodine-labeled cholesterol analogue that accumulates in areas where steroid hormones are produced. It is used in diagnostic procedures to image the adrenal cortex. The drug concentrates in steroid hormone synthesizing tissues, enabling scintigraphic localization and characterization of endocrine dysfunction in the adrenal cortex and ovary. When administered with dexamethasone suppression, it can help differentiate between adrenal adenomas and hyperplasia, particularly in cases of primary aldosteronism where other diagnostic methods like CT scans and adrenal venous sampling yield inconclusive results.
