Iodine-123 is a radioactive isotope of iodine with a half-life of approximately 13.2 hours. It decays by electron capture to tellurium-123, emitting gamma radiation with a characteristic energy of 159 keV, which is ideal for medical imaging. It is primarily used as a radiopharmaceutical diagnostic agent for the evaluation of thyroid function and morphology. The thyroid gland actively absorbs iodine from the bloodstream to synthesize thyroid hormones, making radioactive iodine an effective tool for assessing thyroid function. Iodine-123 is also used as a label in other imaging radiopharmaceuticals, such as metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) and ioflupane (DaTscan), which are used for diagnosing neurological disorders like Parkinson's disease.
