Overview
Iodine-123 human serum albumin (I-123 HSA) is a radiopharmaceutical diagnostic agent used primarily in clinical research to study albumin kinetics and turnover in vivo. It consists of human serum albumin radiolabeled with iodine-123, a gamma-emitting isotope with a principal photon energy of 159 keV and a physical half-life of approximately 13.2 hours. By utilizing gamma-camera detection, researchers can track the distribution and metabolism of albumin between intravascular and extravascular pools. It has been evaluated in Phase 4 clinical studies by institutions such as Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset to compare its performance against other tracers like iodine-125-labeled albumin (SERALB-125) in healthy volunteers. The agent is not a therapeutic drug but a tracer used to characterize albumin metabolism in various physiological and potentially pathological states.
