Overview

Iodine-123-labelled nor-β-CIT is a radioiodinated analogue of cocaine designed as a radiotracer for single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging of monoamine transporter sites in the brain. It binds with high affinity to the serotonin transporter (SERT) and also displays significant binding to dopamine transporters (DAT), with regions of maximal uptake associated with transporter-rich brain areas such as the striatum (DAT) and midbrain (SERT). Its mechanism exploits specific transporter affinities to visualize serotonergic and dopaminergic projections in vivo. It is used primarily as a research radiopharmaceutical for imaging and quantification of serotonin and dopamine transporter densities in neurological diseases such as Parkinson's disease and certain psychiatric conditions[1][2][4][5].
