Iodine-124 is a radioactive isotope of iodine used primarily as a radiotracer in positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. It has a half-life of approximately 4.18 days, making it suitable for centralized production and distribution to clinical sites[7][8]. As a positron emitter, it is commonly used to label biomolecules such as monoclonal antibodies and peptides for immunoPET imaging in oncology and other fields[8]. Its applications include diagnostic imaging for cancer and cardiac amyloidosis when incorporated into specific radiopharmaceuticals such as iobenguane or evuzamitide[1][2]. The isotope is produced via cyclotron irradiation of enriched tellurium targets, followed by purification processes to achieve the required quality for clinical use[6][7][8].
