Iodine-125 brachytherapy is a form of internal radiation therapy in which small radioactive seeds containing the isotope iodine-125 are implanted directly into or near tumor tissue. The seeds emit low-energy gamma rays and X-rays over several weeks to months, delivering a high localized dose of radiation to the tumor while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissues. This technique is most commonly used for prostate cancer but has also been applied in the treatment of other solid tumors such as pancreatic carcinoma, lung cancer, and brain tumors. The mechanism of action involves continuous emission of ionizing radiation from the implanted seeds, leading to DNA damage and cell death in targeted tumor cells. Advances such as CT or ultrasound guidance have improved placement accuracy; newer technologies include 3D printing templates and AI-based navigation systems for individualized treatment planning[1][2][3][4][6].
