131I-LUF is an innovative radiopharmaceutical formulation consisting of a superstable homogeneous mixture of the radioactive isotope Iodine-131 (131I) and Lipiodol Ultra-Fluid (LUF), an ethiodized oil. Developed by the North Sichuan Medical College Affiliated Hospital, it is primarily indicated for the diagnosis and treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The drug is administered via the hepatic artery, where the ethiodized oil carrier selectively accumulates and is retained within the hypervascular tumor microenvironment. The Iodine-131 component provides therapeutic effects through high-energy beta-particle emission, which induces DNA damage and cell death in malignant tissues, while its gamma-emission enables diagnostic imaging for tumor staging and monitoring. The superstable nature of the mixture is designed to prevent the dissociation of the isotope from the oil carrier, thereby reducing systemic toxicity and improving local dose delivery.
