Iodine-131 granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (131I-GM-CSF) is an experimental radiopharmaceutical developed by Southern Medical University for the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). This radioimmunotherapy agent consists of the radioactive isotope Iodine-131, a beta-emitter, conjugated to the cytokine granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF). The drug is administered intravenously and targets cells expressing the GM-CSF receptor, which are frequently found on myeloid leukemia cells. Upon binding to these receptors, the Iodine-131 component delivers localized cytotoxic radiation directly to the cancer cells, causing DNA damage and cell death. Preclinical studies in leukemic mice have demonstrated that 131I-GM-CSF can reduce leukemia cells in the blood and bone marrow and prolong survival, indicating its potential as a targeted radiation therapy for AML.
