Overview

**Iodine-131-labeled chitosan-collagen microspheres** are biodegradable radioembolic microspheres developed as an experimental transarterial radioembolization treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma. The approximately 10 micrometer microspheres are composed of chitosan and type-I collagen cross-linked with glutaraldehyde and radiolabeled with iodine-131. Following hepatic-arterial administration, the microspheres lodge preferentially within tumor-feeding liver vasculature, producing local embolization and sustained beta-radiation exposure that induces tumor-cell DNA damage. In orthotopic hepatocellular carcinoma rat models, the agent showed liver-localized retention by SPECT imaging, biodegradation over approximately 12 weeks, tumor-growth inhibition, and improved median survival.
