Overview

**Iodine-131-labeled silk fibroin microspheres** are biodegradable radiopharmaceutical microspheres developed experimentally for transarterial radioembolization of hepatocellular carcinoma. The product consists of genipin-crosslinked silk fibroin microspheres, derived from silkworm-cocoon fibroin and radiolabeled with iodine-131 using chloramine-T chemistry. Following intra-arterial hepatic administration, the approximately 11 micrometer microspheres embolize tumor-feeding hepatic arterial vessels while iodine-131 delivers localized internal radiation to liver tumor tissue. In a rat hepatocellular carcinoma model, the material showed favorable tumor-growth inhibition, biodistribution, biodegradability, hemocompatibility, and low cytotoxicity.
