Iodine-125 seeds are small, titanium-encapsulated radioactive sources containing the radioisotope Iodine-125. In the context of breast cancer surgery, they are primarily used for **Radioactive Seed Localization (RSL)** to mark non-palpable lesions or metastatic lymph nodes (Targeted Axillary Dissection). The seed emits low-energy gamma radiation (approximately 27-35 keV), which can be detected intraoperatively using a handheld gamma probe, allowing surgeons to precisely locate and excise the marked tissue. Beyond localization, these seeds are also widely used in **permanent brachytherapy** for the treatment of localized prostate cancer, where they are implanted directly into the tumor to deliver a localized dose of radiation over several months as the isotope decays (half-life of approximately 59.4 days).
