131I-LUF (Iodine-131-labeled Lipiodol Ultra-Fluide) is a therapeutic radiopharmaceutical composed of ethiodized oil (Lipiodol) radiolabeled with the beta-emitting isotope iodine-131. It is primarily used for the treatment of hypervascular liver tumors, such as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and hepatic metastases. The agent is administered via intra-arterial injection into the hepatic artery, where the Lipiodol carrier is selectively retained within the tumor's neovasculature and extracellular space for extended periods. This localization allows for the delivery of high-dose internal radiation (brachytherapy) directly to the tumor cells while sparing surrounding healthy liver tissue. Although Lipiodol is a commercial product of Guerbet, 131I-LUF is typically prepared and studied in specialized clinical and academic research settings rather than as a formally branded commercial drug.
