Iodine I 131 IPA is a radioconjugate consisting of the tumor-specific amino acid derivative 4-iodo-L-phenylalanine labeled with the beta-emitting radionuclide iodine I-131. It is designed for targeted antineoplastic activity in tumors that overexpress the L-type amino acid transporter 1 (LAT-1), such as glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). The compound is taken up by LAT-1 transporters on tumor cells; once internalized, the radioactive iodine emits beta particles that cause localized radiation damage and destruction of cancerous cells while minimizing harm to surrounding healthy tissue. Iodine I 131 IPA has been granted orphan drug status in both the United States and European Union for GBM treatment and has shown promising results in early-phase clinical trials when combined with external radiation therapy[1][3][5][6].
