iodine tincture (Fujian Medical University)

Iodine tincture is a well-established topical antiseptic and germicide composed of elemental iodine and potassium iodide dissolved in a mixture of ethanol and water. As a small molecule agent, it exerts broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity through the oxidation of microbial protoplasmic proteins and the denaturation of amino groups, effectively neutralizing bacteria, fungi, and viruses. It is widely utilized as an over-the-counter first-aid antiseptic for minor wounds and has specialized applications in clinical settings, such as root canal disinfection in endodontics. In a clinical trial conducted by Fujian Medical University, iodine tincture was employed as a traditional comparator against antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) for the treatment of chronic periapical periodontitis.
