Overview

Iodipamide is a water-soluble radiographic contrast agent primarily used for cholecystography and intravenous cholangiography to visualize the gallbladder and biliary ducts. After intravenous administration (often as iodipamide meglumine), it is rapidly taken up by the liver and secreted into bile within 10–15 minutes. The high iodine content of iodipamide makes it radio-opaque on x-ray imaging, allowing clear visualization of the hepatic and common bile ducts as well as the gallbladder. Most of the administered dose is eliminated in feces via bile; about 10% is excreted renally[1][2][3][4][6]. Its mechanism of action relies on its ability to absorb x-rays due to its iodine atoms rather than interaction with biological targets.
