Overview

Iodixanol is a non-ionic, dimeric, water-soluble iodinated contrast medium used in diagnostic imaging procedures such as coronary angiography, computed tomography (CT), and urography. As an iso-osmolar agent, it is designed to have the same osmolality as human blood (290 mOsm/kg H2O), which is intended to reduce the risk of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) and adverse hemodynamic effects compared to older high-osmolar or low-osmolar agents. It was developed by Nycomed (now part of GE HealthCare) and is widely utilized in patients with impaired renal function or cardiovascular risk factors to enhance the visualization of internal structures during X-ray-based imaging.
