Overview

**Iodobenzamide** (IBZM, also known as iolopride) is a small molecule radiopharmaceutical used as a selective dopamine D2 receptor antagonist for SPECT imaging of the brain. It is commonly radiolabeled with iodine-123 or iodine-125 and is used primarily in nuclear medicine to differentiate Parkinson's disease from other neurodegenerative disorders such as multiple system atrophy and Lewy body dementia. IBZM binds specifically to the dopamine D2 receptors, allowing visualization and quantification of receptor density and distribution in the striatum. Its mechanism of action is thus based on competitive antagonism of the dopamine D2 receptor. Investigative applications have included both clinical imaging and research into schizophrenia, with some sources mentioning receptor blockade as a pharmacologic action. The molecule is not used therapeutically but as a diagnostic tracer[1][2][3][7].
