Overview

Iodobenzamide I-123 (IBZM) is a radiopharmaceutical tracer used in Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) imaging to visualize and quantify dopamine D2-like receptor availability in the striatum. It is a substituted benzamide that acts as a selective antagonist for dopamine D2 and D3 receptors. In clinical research conducted by the Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron Research Institute, IBZM SPECT is employed to study dopamine receptor hypofunction in patients with alcohol dependence. The imaging is used to assess whether reduced receptor binding serves as a predictive marker for relapse in detoxified individuals, often in conjunction with pharmacological challenges like the apomorphine test to monitor the status of the dopaminergic system.
