Overview

Iodoform is a yellow crystalline organoiodine compound (CHI3) historically used as an antiseptic and disinfectant. It acts primarily by releasing iodine upon decomposition in tissues or secretions; the free iodine denatures bacterial proteins through oxidation and exerts broad-spectrum antimicrobial effects[2][8]. Iodoform has been widely used in wound dressings and surgical packing (notably as part of bismuth iodoform paraffin paste/BIPP), dental root canal materials due to its radiopacity, and veterinary medicine[2][8]. Its use has declined with the advent of safer modern antiseptics but remains relevant in certain surgical and dental applications. The mechanism of action is attributed to chemical debridement via collagen fibrinolysis and cytotoxicity at higher concentrations[2][8]. Notable side effects include local irritation, potential neurotoxicity if absorbed systemically or combined with bismuth compounds (as in BIPP), allergic reactions, and rare dermatological complications[5][8].
