Overview

Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate (IPBC) is a synthetic small molecule preservative and biocide from the carbamate chemical family. It was originally developed in the 1970s for use as a dry-film preservative in paints and coatings to protect against mold, mildew, and fungal growth. Over time its applications expanded to include wood preservatives, metalworking fluids, disinfectants/biocides for industrial uses, and more recently as an effective antifungal preservative in personal care products and cosmetics. In these settings it is used at very low concentrations (typically below 0.1%) due to its efficacy against a broad spectrum of microorganisms[5][7]. The mechanism of action involves inhibition of fungal growth through interference with cellular processes essential for survival[5]. While generally considered safe at recommended concentrations in topical products, it can cause contact allergy in some individuals and is acutely toxic by inhalation; thus it should not be used in aerosolized or inhaled formulations[1][7]. There are also concerns about potential environmental toxicity.
