Overview

Iodoxamic acid is a hexaiodinated, water-soluble radiographic contrast medium specifically developed for intravenous cholangiography and cholecystography. It is used to visualize the biliary tree and gallbladder during diagnostic imaging procedures, such as CT cholangiography. The drug is primarily eliminated via biliary excretion, where it achieves high concentrations in the bile to provide radiopacity. Developed by Bracco, it was marketed under brand names like Endomirabil and Endobil. While it was a standard agent for biliary imaging in the late 20th century, its use has largely been superseded by non-invasive modalities like magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) and ultrasound.
