Overview
Ioglicic acid is a water-soluble, ionic, monomeric iodinated contrast medium used historically for X-ray imaging. It contains three iodine atoms per molecule, which absorb X-rays to provide contrast in radiographic images. It was typically administered as the meglumine salt (meglumine ioglicate) for various diagnostic procedures, including cerebral angiography, aortography, peripheral arteriography, and intravenous urography. Developed by Schering AG, it has largely been superseded by non-ionic contrast agents which have a better safety profile and lower osmolality.
