Overview

Iomazenil is an imidazobenzodiazepine derivative that acts as a benzodiazepine receptor antagonist and partial inverse agonist at the GABA A receptor complex. It was introduced in 1989 by Hoffmann-La Roche primarily as an iodine-123-labeled SPECT tracer for imaging central benzodiazepine receptors (GABA A receptors) in the brain. Iomazenil is structurally related to flumazenil and has been investigated as a potential treatment for alcohol use disorder. In research settings, it is used to image epileptic seizure foci and study GABAergic function in neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, where it can be used experimentally to reduce brain GABA levels[8].
