Overview

Ionolyte is a sterile, isotonic intravenous infusion solution containing sodium chloride, sodium acetate trihydrate, potassium chloride, and magnesium chloride hexahydrate. It is used as a source of water and electrolytes for patients requiring fluid replacement or correction of electrolyte and acid-base imbalances, particularly mild metabolic acidosis. The composition of Ionolyte closely matches plasma electrolyte concentrations to help restore or maintain normal osmotic conditions in both extracellular and intracellular compartments. Acetate in the solution is metabolized to bicarbonate in hepatic and extrahepatic tissues, providing a mild alkalizing effect suitable for patients with a tendency toward acidosis. The pharmacological effects are those of its components—sodium (important for neurotransmission and cardiac electrophysiology), potassium (essential for nerve conduction, muscle contraction, acid-base regulation), magnesium (involved in numerous enzymatic reactions), acetate (bicarbonate precursor), and chloride[1][2][4][6]. Developed by Fresenius Kabi, Ionolyte is primarily indicated for use as an IV fluid replacement therapy in cases such as dehydration or metabolic acidosis.
