Overview

Ionomycin is a polyether antibiotic and a selective calcium ionophore produced by the bacterium Streptomyces conglobatus. It binds divalent cations with high selectivity for Ca2+ over Mg2+, facilitating the transport of calcium ions across biological membranes. Ionomycin is widely used as a research tool to increase intracellular calcium levels, enabling studies of Ca2+-dependent cellular processes such as signal transduction, apoptosis, and cytokine production. It can induce cell activation and promote apoptosis by activating protein kinase C (PKC) pathways and other downstream signaling cascades[1][5][6]. Ionomycin is not approved for clinical use in humans but is extensively utilized in laboratory research.
