Overview

Iopentol is a non-ionic, low-osmolar, monomeric iodinated X-ray contrast medium developed by Nycomed (now part of GE HealthCare). It is used as a diagnostic imaging agent to enhance the visualization of internal structures during procedures such as computed tomography (CT), angiography (including cerebral, aortic arch, and peripheral), and urography. By increasing the attenuation of X-rays, iopentol provides high-contrast images of blood vessels and organs. It is typically administered intravenously or intra-arterially and is available in multiple iodine concentrations, such as 150, 250, 300, and 350 mg I/mL. While generally well-tolerated, clinical studies have noted transient effects on microcirculation and red blood cell deformability, as well as rare instances of hypersensitivity reactions.
