Overview

ior-EPOCIM is a recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) biosimilar developed and produced in Cuba. It is used primarily as an erythropoiesis stimulating agent to correct anemia, optimize hemoglobin levels, and reduce transfusion requirements in patients, with particular use in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy[2][5][1]. Mechanistically, ior-EPOCIM acts by binding to the erythropoietin receptor on hematopoietic progenitor cells in the bone marrow, stimulating proliferation and maturation of red blood cell precursors, thereby increasing erythrocyte (red blood cell) production. It is also being investigated for neuroprotective effects in Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders[3][7]. Clinical studies have shown ior-EPOCIM to be effective, well-tolerated, and generally safe, with adverse events mostly mild and typical for this drug class. It is officially approved for human use in Cuba and several other countries[3][7][4].
