Overview
Callergin is a nasal spray developed by Marinomed Biotech AG, primarily containing iota-carrageenan (branded as Carragelose), a sulfated polymer derived from red seaweed. It is designed to treat and prevent symptoms of allergic rhinitis and rhinoconjunctivitis. The mechanism involves forming a physical, moisturizing protective barrier on the nasal mucosa, which prevents allergens (such as grass pollen) from attaching to the mucosal surface and triggering an allergic response. Additionally, iota-carrageenan is known for its broad-spectrum anti-viral properties, as it can non-specifically bind to and trap respiratory viruses, preventing them from infecting mucosal cells. In the European Union, Callergin is certified as a Class I medical device.
