Overview

Iotalamic acid is an ionic, high-osmolality iodinated contrast agent used in diagnostic radiology. As a tri-iodinated benzoic acid derivative, it functions by absorbing X-rays, thereby enhancing the visibility of internal structures such as blood vessels, the urinary tract, and joints during radiographic procedures. It is commonly formulated as meglumine or sodium salts (e.g., meglumine iotalamate) for various applications including intravenous urography, angiography, and computed tomography (CT). While newer non-ionic contrast agents have largely superseded high-osmolality agents in many clinical settings due to better tolerability, iotalamic acid remains an established active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufactured by companies like Laboratorios Juste for global markets.
