Overview

Iotrolan is a nonionic, isotonic, water-soluble dimeric radiocontrast agent containing iodine. It is primarily used to enhance the visibility of body structures in X-ray-based imaging techniques such as myelography (imaging of the spinal cord), angiography (blood vessels), urography (urinary tract), hysterosalpingography (uterus and fallopian tubes), ventriculography, cisternography, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. Its mechanism of action relies on the absorption of X-rays by its firmly bound iodine atoms, thereby increasing contrast in radiographic images. After intrathecal administration, it is absorbed into the bloodstream and excreted almost entirely via the kidneys within a few days. Iotrolan was initially developed by Bayer AG and has been marketed under several brand names including Isovist and Osmovist[1][2][3][5][6][7].
