Iotroxic acid is an iodinated, water-soluble contrast medium used primarily for intravenous cholangiography and cholecystography. As a triiodinated benzoic acid derivative, it is characterized by high biliary excretion following intravenous administration, which allows for the opacification and detailed visualization of the bile ducts and gallbladder during X-ray or computed tomography (CT) imaging. It was historically utilized in drip infusion cholangiography (DIC) to evaluate biliary anatomy, detect gallstones (choledocholithiasis), and identify pancreaticobiliary maljunctions, particularly prior to laparoscopic procedures. Developed by Schering AG, it was marketed under the brand name Biliscopin. While effective, its clinical use has significantly declined with the advent of non-invasive imaging modalities such as magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP).
