Overview

Meglumine ioxaglate is a low-osmolality ionic iodinated contrast agent (LOCM) primarily used for diagnostic imaging. Developed by Guerbet in collaboration with Baker, it is marketed under the brand name Hexabrix. Chemically, it is a monoacid dimer of ioxaglic acid, typically formulated as a mixture of meglumine and sodium salts. Its mechanism of action involves the high iodine content, which provides radiopacity by blocking X-rays, allowing for the visualization of blood vessels, organs, and anatomical structures during procedures such as angiography, computed tomography (CT), and arthrography. Following intravascular administration, the agent is rapidly distributed through the circulatory system and excreted unchanged by the kidneys into the urine.
