Overview

Ioxilan is a nonionic, tri-iodinated, low-osmolar diagnostic contrast agent used for intravascular enhancement in medical imaging. As a radiopaque agent, it contains iodine atoms that absorb X-rays, thereby opacifying blood vessels and tissues to improve the visualization of internal structures during procedures such as angiography, urography, and computed tomography (CT) scans. Developed by Guerbet and marketed under the brand name Oxilan, it was designed to provide high diagnostic efficacy with a favorable safety profile compared to older ionic contrast media. Although it was discontinued in the United States in 2017, it has been used globally for various diagnostic imaging applications including cerebral and coronary arteriography.
