Overview

Ioxitalamate is an ionic, high-osmolar iodinated contrast medium (HOCM) developed by Guerbet. It is used primarily in X-ray based imaging procedures, including excretory urography, angiography, and computed tomography (CT) scans. As an iodinated agent, it works by absorbing X-ray photons, thereby increasing the contrast between the vessels or organs containing the agent and the surrounding tissues. It is typically formulated as meglumine and/or sodium salts. While effective for diagnostic visualization, like other ionic high-osmolar agents, it is associated with a higher risk of adverse reactions and nephrotoxicity compared to newer non-ionic, low-osmolar contrast media.
