Overview

Ioxitalamic acid is an ionic, high-osmolar iodinated contrast medium (HOCM) used primarily for medical imaging of the gastrointestinal tract. As a first-generation ionic monomer, it functions as a radiopaque agent that absorbs X-rays, thereby enhancing the visualization of internal structures during X-ray and computed tomography (CT) procedures. It is typically administered orally or rectally as sodium or meglumine salts (e.g., under the brand name Telebrix) to opacify the bowel, facilitating the differentiation of bowel loops from adjacent soft tissue masses. Due to its high osmolarity (1500-1800 mOsm/kg) and potential for significant side effects, its use is generally restricted to cases where barium sulfate is contraindicated, and it is not intended for intravascular administration.
