IP-QSV (Institut Pasteur Quadrivalent Shigella Vaccine) is a synthetic oligosaccharide-based conjugate vaccine developed by the **Institut Pasteur** in collaboration with the **International Vaccine Institute (IVI)** for the prevention of shigellosis. Shigellosis is a major cause of diarrheal disease and mortality, particularly among children under five in low- and middle-income countries. The vaccine is quadrivalent, designed to provide broad protection against four prevalent Shigella serotypes: *Shigella sonnei* and *Shigella flexneri* serotypes 2a, 3a, and 6. Unlike traditional polysaccharide vaccines, IP-QSV utilizes chemically synthesized oligosaccharides that mimic the O-antigen of the Shigella lipopolysaccharide. These synthetic antigens are conjugated to a carrier protein (typically tetanus toxoid) to induce a robust, T-cell dependent immune response. The vaccine is formulated with an aluminum-based adjuvant and administered via intramuscular injection. It is currently being evaluated in Phase 1/2a clinical trials in endemic regions like Mali to assess safety and immunogenicity across various age groups, including infants.
